Tips For Gently Coloring Your Hair When It’s Shedding

People sometimes ask me if it's possible to continue to color your hair after it starts falling out or shedding. After all, having it become thinner over time is bad enough, but having a dull, flat or unflattering color is even worse. I heard from someone who said: “I think that I have telogen effluvium but I'm not one hundred percent sure. My hair is shedding pretty poorly and it's averaging around 275 hairs per day. I'm scared to try it, but I look old and dreadful with the gray hair coming through. ” I'll tell you my take on this in the following article.

Coloring Your Hair Often Means You'll Lose A Bit More: I wish I could tell you that I have been able to color my hair during shedding and suffer no increase in hair fall. Unfortunately, this just is not true. You have to manipulate and tug at your hair a good deal to get the color spread evenly. This alone is going to make more fall out. And when you're already shedding, this can seem unacceptable. The good news though is that I also noticed less fall in the days following the coloring so that it did not turn out to be as bad as I thought. Yes, I probably did lose more hairs, but the new color looked a lot better so I felt that it was worth it.

With that said, I used to try to color my hair much less to try to spare myself this process. And over time, I came up with some things that helped me minimize the shedding during or after coloring. I'll share them below.

Try Glaze: Hair glaze was a huge weapon in my arsenal. I would mix the colored glaze with my regular conditioner. And as a result, I would suffer no increase in shed and over time my color was richer. It was not a permanent solution, but it allowed me a long reprieve between colorings.

Try Using Non Permanent Or Gentle Color: Look for dye called “gentle.” You want something that does not contain ammonia. The reason for this is the dye can be harsh and can contribute to inflammation on your scalp. Inflammation can worsen or cause hair loss. So you want to use the most gentle product you can find. And you want to leave it on your head the least amount of time that will still be effective.

Consider Using A Root Brush Only On The Hairs You Need To Color: A stylist actually pointed this out to me when she noticed that my ends were darker than the rest of my hair. She asked me why I was always coloring my whole head and she suggested I only color the hairs that were gray or dull. I started using one of those wands that colored only roots and the results were very good. (I used it on the full length of my hair instead of only the roots, but I limited this process to greys.) This saved my scalp and it lessened the shed hairs.

To answer the question posed though, nothing says you can not continue to color your hair. But, you should be as gentle as is possible and you should try to prolong the time between colorings as it's my experience that color increases your shed on that day. If you are unsure that you can do this yourself, go to a stylist. Some stylist actually specialize in hair loss and they know how to be very gentle. I've found that most people can do this themselves, but some just feel more comfortable leaving it to the experts.

Between the styling gel, shampoo, conditioners, chemical treatments, blow-dryers, and styling tools, our hair takes a lot of abuse. All the different things we do to it to make it look the way we want can actually damage it, making it look and feel lifeless and dull.

To distribute the oil more evenly, comb or brush it through your hair. After applying argan oil, wrap a towel around your hair and leave it in for an hour before rinsing and shampooing.

3. Coconut Oil

Coconut oil not only reminds you of vacations on sunny, tropical beaches, but it has a whole range of benefits:

  • Coconut oil is also rich in vitamin E, which is necessary for the healthy growth of your hair.
  • As a natural emollient, coconut oil bins restores your hair's shine and body by sealing moisture into each strand.
  • The lauric and capric acids found in coconut oil are antimicrobial agents. Microbes in the scalp and roots of the hair are a major cause of hair loss, so coconut oil can help to slow down or stop hair loss.
  • Coconut oil contains lots of saturated fats, which help keep the skin on the scalp from flaking off, reducing dandruff.

Coconut oil should be massaged through your hair in the same way as described earlier in this article, about 30 minutes prior to washing your hair. Use a shampoo made from natural ingredients and warm water to rinse it out of your hair.

How Is Keratin Connected With Hair Loss?

Keratin is a very tough protein commonly found in the skin's epidermis, nails and the hair. Due to its permeable nature, Keratin functions as the cell's protective material. In spite of this, there are instances that keratin production is affected by some hereditary disorders. Keratinocytes are the cells responsible for secreting keratin, and genes are the ones coding this tough protein. In order to build a complete protein, amino acids should be combined, which is indicated by the genes.

The following instances show how keratin and hair loss is connected:

• The function of genes is generally modified if it is mutated due to changes or alterations to the chromosomes' DNA sequence.

• One can observe the various changes to the body when the affected genes are involved in keratin production.

• Scaly-looking skin can be developed affected by keratin-involved genetic disorders.

• If the keratin involved is in the hair production, hair has a tendency to show signs of poor growth and may break easily.

Sufficient amounts of keratin are produced poorly when mutated keratinocytes in the hair follicles are present. There is a high possibility that the deleted keratin will be removed by the body, if the hair follicles produce any defected keratin. Also, there is a high possibility that the body will respond by removing hair strands when the keratin is deleted, thus, increasing the number of lost hair. Hair loss problems are caused by the increased number of defective hair strands during the dividing process of the hair follicle cell.

Listed below are the recommended treatments for hair loss involving keratin abnormalities:

• Chemotherapy

• Drugs with cytotoxic properties – works by eliminating defected cells and leaving room for the normal cells to divide. Hair growth can easily be achieved as merely the normal hair follicles react to the medication.

• Laser therapy – Using hair follicles, division of cells and hair growth are promoted by this process. Production of keratin by keratinocytes is stimulated by low laser intensity, wherein an increase in hair growth can be expected. This has been made possible for keratin serves as a building material for hair strands.

• Hair Loss Vitamins and Nutrients – These nutrients will assist in the process of maintaining the necessary amino acids

Keratin is protein and in order to promote its production, a diet rich with the protein nutrient should also be maintained. Likewise, keratin is made up of amino acids coming from the food we consume. In order to activate the enzymes and molecules that is involved in the keratin synthesis, vitamins and minerals should also be also added to the diet. Remember that keratin production and hair growth is affected by the deficiency of these essential nutrients.

Hair Loss Linked to Higher Risk of Prostate Cancer

Males often suffer from baldness, receding hair line and thinning of hair. This is mainly because of certain male hormones or androgens like testosterone. This problem is observed primarily in adult male humans. The pattern and degree of baldness varies from person to person. If a man is suffering from acute hair loss, he should look into the roots of the problem and consult a doctor immediately. It is a really advisable thing to always pay attention to any signs of possible problems with our health. It must have been in this light that some have linked alopecia among men to the possibility of having prostate cancer. But how true is this?

I think it would be appropriate to first of all note that testosterone is a prime suspect in hair loss. High levels of testosterone lead to alopecia raising the possibility of prostate cancer at a later stage in life. Some studies have shown that patients suffering from prostate cancer with male pattern baldness were likely to have experienced alopecia when still very young.

Several studies have been done to establish how hair loss is linked to risk of prostate cancer. One of such studies was carried out by researchers at Paris Descartes University, headed by Dr. Philippe Giraud. The study focused on 669 men, 388 of which have prostate cancer while the remaining 281 men were healthy with no signs of prostate cancer. A major conclusion from the research is that men who started noticeable signs of hair loss, like a receding hairline or balding, in their 20s were twice more likely than those without these signs until their 30s to develop prostate cancer many years later.

It has been noted, however, that more researchers still need to be carried out to establish the link between hair loss and prostate cancer more clearly.

One thing that appears clear at this stage is that androgens, including testosterone, hinder hair growth and encourage prostate cells expansion at the same time. The drug Finasteride is good in checking these incompetent sequences of androgens.
